Barcodes don't
have to be complicated...
They are simply a series of bars and spaces that are machine readable (scanable).
Today there are approximately 50 different
barcode symbologies - each performing a specific duty for a specific industry
or requirement. The most common barcodes are UPC (Universal Product Code)
used in retail outlets for pricing; Code 39 (used by the Post Office) along
with Code 128 are alphanumeric symbologies - meaning both letters and numbers
can be entered into barcode format; Interleaf 2 of 5 is numeric only and used
by airlines primarily to represent airport codes which are converted from
a three letter alpha to a numeric series. Most recently added to the technology
of barcodes is the 3D (Three Dimensional) barcode that allows for paragraphs
of scanable information in a very small space.
All barcodes must have a "quite zone"
both entering and exiting the barcode. Nothing is allowed to be printed or
marked in the "quiet zone" area or the barcode will not scan properly.
Even background color can effect the scanability of a barcode. Contrast is key to a quality scan.
In actuality, it's both the spaces and the bars
that are scanned, not just the bars themselves, depending on the type of barcode. Thus, contrast in color is critical
for scanability of barcodes. The best combination for barcodes is of course
black & white, however, many different color combinations work well, also.
Reds cannot be used at all, as the light beam that reads the barcode is also
red, making the contrast impossible to read.
Most symbologies can be created right here
at Label Systems through our creative department. We use industry standard
barcoding software to give you the highest quality barcodes available. All
that is required from you, the customer, is the number assigned and the type
of symbology required. The barcode software then creates the code and determines
the "check digit" required for the code.
Consecutive Number
Barcodes are another option for uses such as equipment, office furniture,
parts identification plates, inventory control, etc. and are used by large
corporations, hospitals and manufacturers all around the world.
